Fernando Licay, a Filipino from Santa Clara, CA, was swimming 25 ft from the beach when he got bitten. He swam within a designated swimming area one mile from the downtown area of the base. Several co-workers observed the incident, run into the water to rescue him but Fernandol later died in the base's Branch Health Center. Medical personnel tried to save him for 25 minutes. He was 33 years old.

Since this incident happened at the US Navy base in San Diego Garcia, the facts are hard to come by. Should more information be available, it will be posted.
