Patrick Briney was sitting on his kajak fishing for baitfish, when his foot was bitten. Although a friend put on a torniquet right away, the blood loss was too great and he died on the way back to shore.The beach area at the Makena Strate Recreation Area was closed immediately. A new study is on its way around Maui to get a better idea about the swim patterns of some marked sharks. The last fatal incident in Maui happened in August.
